Firms urged to bid for Swansea Central work | Insider Media

Welsh businesses are being urged to bid for work on the £135m Swansea Central Phase One scheme.

Principal contractor Buckingham Group Contracting, working in collaboration with Swansea Council, wants to maximise the use of local and regional expertise.

There are 30 work packages available, with a total value of more than £23m. The value of the individual work packages starts from £10,000.

Packages include: mechanical and electrical second tier sub-contractors – £12m; external building, including brickwork, doors, frames and glazing – £2m; internal fit-out and finishes, including walls, flooring and plaster/render – £9m.

A full breakdown will be available at a free-entry meet-the-buyer event for businesses and on the Business Wales website.

The event, on 11 March, is being held by Buckingham Group and the council in collaboration with Welsh Government service Business Wales, CITB (the Construction Industry Training Board) and the Swansea Bay City Deal.

Swansea Central Phase One will bring a 3,500-capacity indoor arena, coastal park, landmark bridge, car parking, homes and commercial premises to a key city centre site.

The £1.3bn City Deal is part funding the arena; the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund is part funding the bridge.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: “Welsh businesses are already finding work on this world-class regeneration project. I urge other business to attend this meet-the-buyer event.

“Buckingham Group are expected to give every possible opportunity to Welsh firms. Similar opportunities for local and regional business will form part of all City Deal projects coming forward in the near future.”

Kevin Underwood, managing director for sports and leisure at Buckingham Group Contracting, added: “More than 200 Welsh businesses attended a Swansea Central Phase One meet-the-buyer event at the Liberty Stadium last March; I expect similar interest this time.”

Buckingham Group have been on the site – between the LC and Tesco Marina – since May last year. Main construction work began in November and the project is due to be complete in the second half of next year.

Howard Jacobson, growth adviser at Business Wales, said: “This meet the buyer event is a prime opportunity for Welsh contractors to gain more insight into the appropriate packages before bidding for the transformational scheme.”

Ms Blythyn said: “The Welsh Government wants to Transform Towns across Wales, making them fit for the 21st century. I’m really pleased the Welsh Government is supporting this new and exciting Riverside Venue development in Newtown with a £950,000 investment. University of South Wales Partners With Capital Law

The University of South Wales’ (USW) School of Law has partnered with leading Welsh law firm, Capital Law, to develop its Legal Advice Clinic’s pro bono initiative. The new scheme will see junior lawyers from Capital Law collaborate with Student Clinic Volunteers, to provide pro bono legal advice to the community.

The School of Law set up the Clinic to increase its students’ opportunities for legal pro bono work. The Clinic is a free community-based face-to-face advice service staffed by trained Student Clinic Volunteers, who work under the supervision of practising solicitors and barristers.

Managed remotely from Capital Law’s offices by Richard Thomas, who heads up the firm’s Employment and Immigration team, and Nicola Mead-Batten, who leads its Public Law & Regulatory services, the junior lawyers will work on a rota-based system. Each week, two of the trainee solicitors will be ‘on-call’, supporting the students who interview clients, assess them and draw legal advice.

From Copenhagen to Cardiff: One Woman’s Drive to Keep Passion for Pastry Alive

The Pontcanna-based bakery is encouraging other businesses to choose apprenticeships as a way of bringing innovative ideas into the workplace.

Brød the Danish Bakery and Coffee Shop, which opened in 2015, was inspired by owner Betina Skovbro’s desire to bring traditional Danish baking to Wales’ capital city. In doing so, it also created a unique opportunity to train the next generation of baking professionals in the craft of Danish baking.

The bakery owner moved to Cardiff from Copenhagen in 1998. Having made her home in the city, she saw an opportunity to bring a taste of Scandinavia to Cardiff.

New Business Supporting Men’s Mental Health – Business News Wales

A new company in Colwyn Bay has taken up the challenge of supporting the mental health needs of men by creating an online video platform aimed at providing support when people need someone to talk with.

TalkSally.co.uk has been created with the support of Business Wales, the Welsh Government’s business support programme, to provide a safe and welcoming environment that allows people to talk about themselves, and interact, at times when they just need someone to be there. It aims to help improve mental health, combat loneliness, increase confidence and happiness and hopefully stop any future need for structured counselling.

The new company has been launched by Sally Jones, a professional counsellor with over eight years of experience and comes at a time when men accounted for three quarters of UK deaths by suicide last year*.

Anglesey Landmark to be Transformed into Hotel and Business Centre

One of Anglesey’s best-known buildings is to be transformed into a business centre and conference venue.

Tristan Haynes, the new owner of Grade II-listed Shire Hall in Llangefni, is also planning to open a pod hotel, an art gallery and attract companies of all sizes to the 45-room landmark.

Llangefni is the administrative heart of the island, and for many years Shire Hall has been home to the Town Council and the HM Courts and Tribunals Services; it was also previously used by the county authority and police.

Tristan, who grew up in South Africa, the US and the Middle East before travelling the world as an Olympic-level windsurfer, spotted the Glanhwfa Road site when searching for a refurbishment project.
