Welsh Business News / WelshBiz – Business Wales Support for Business Women in Wales…

Welsh Business News / WelshBiz – Business Wales Support for Business Women in Wales…

The Welsh Government recognises and supports the importance and contribution that women entrepreneurs make to the economy of Wales, however, there is more to do to continue this journey and further develop the representation of women owned businesses in Wales.

The Business Wales service has therefore renewed its commitment to support and encourage more women to successfully start, sustain or grow a business in Wales and for them to reach their full potential.

Alongside the Welsh Government a significant number of other organisations share this commitment and have joined in the development of a gender aware approach in Wales to encourage and better tailor their support to women entrepreneurs.

This approach has been shaped by an expert panel (the Panel) consisting of representatives from businesses, banks, business support organisations and academia backed by consultation with established or prospective business women & female entrepreneurs in Wales.

The approach sets out a common vision to supporting business and entrepreneurial women in Wales and is supplemented by a ‘Good Practice Guide’ that outlines how business support organisations can better tailor their services to meet the needs of business women or female entrepreneurs.

The Panel has made ten recommendations that build on the current strengths of business support services in Wales and aim to create a structure which the broader business support community can identify with and adopt.

The Welsh Government will take forward the recommendations of the Panel to further develop our support for entrepreneurial women through our business Wales service by producing a detailed action plan.

However, Business Wales cannot do it alone and actively encourage other support organisations to join in the journey and adopt the approach set out, in part or whole, and follow the principles of the Good Practice Guide.

Getting involved: Supporting organisations – make a difference

The Welsh Government and supporting partners are keen to talk to any organisation that deliver business support in Wales and are willing to become actively involved in supporting women in starting, sustaining or growing their business.

There are many ways in which organisations can become involved:

• implementing the associated ‘Good Practice Guide’

• making a commitment on the Business Wales or Be the Spark website to showcase what you currently do, and what you are going to do to improve support for women entrepreneurs

• joining in the conversation on #businesswomenwales

• spreading the word and encouraging others to take part

To commit your support please contact Business Wales here.

Mentoring

In a survey undertaken by the University of South Wales (USW) one of the most valued support for women either starting or sustaining their business is access to business mentors as experienced and informal sources of guidance in addition to business advisors. Business Wales has over 500 mentors, of which 38% are women, available as part of its service that are ready to help you on your journey to start, sustain or grow your business, and if you would prefer a woman mentor just ask.

Click here for more information on finding a business mentor or becoming a mentor yourself.

Other organisations that provide business mentoring support:

• Princes Trust if you are aged 18-30

• Prime Cymru if you are aged 50 or over

Incubation Units/Co-working locations and business hubs

There are a number of business start-up units and working spaces (incubator units) across Wales that are great opportunities to start or grow your business with other businesses that are in the same situation, possibly facing the same challenges as yourself. These incubator units deliver packages of support to help your business and yourself.

Firms urged to bid for Swansea Central work | Insider Media

Welsh businesses are being urged to bid for work on the £135m Swansea Central Phase One scheme.

Principal contractor Buckingham Group Contracting, working in collaboration with Swansea Council, wants to maximise the use of local and regional expertise.

There are 30 work packages available, with a total value of more than £23m. The value of the individual work packages starts from £10,000.

Packages include: mechanical and electrical second tier sub-contractors – £12m; external building, including brickwork, doors, frames and glazing – £2m; internal fit-out and finishes, including walls, flooring and plaster/render – £9m.

A full breakdown will be available at a free-entry meet-the-buyer event for businesses and on the Business Wales website.

The event, on 11 March, is being held by Buckingham Group and the council in collaboration with Welsh Government service Business Wales, CITB (the Construction Industry Training Board) and the Swansea Bay City Deal.

Swansea Central Phase One will bring a 3,500-capacity indoor arena, coastal park, landmark bridge, car parking, homes and commercial premises to a key city centre site.

The £1.3bn City Deal is part funding the arena; the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund is part funding the bridge.

Council leader Rob Stewart said: “Welsh businesses are already finding work on this world-class regeneration project. I urge other business to attend this meet-the-buyer event.

“Buckingham Group are expected to give every possible opportunity to Welsh firms. Similar opportunities for local and regional business will form part of all City Deal projects coming forward in the near future.”

Kevin Underwood, managing director for sports and leisure at Buckingham Group Contracting, added: “More than 200 Welsh businesses attended a Swansea Central Phase One meet-the-buyer event at the Liberty Stadium last March; I expect similar interest this time.”

Buckingham Group have been on the site – between the LC and Tesco Marina – since May last year. Main construction work began in November and the project is due to be complete in the second half of next year.

Howard Jacobson, growth adviser at Business Wales, said: “This meet the buyer event is a prime opportunity for Welsh contractors to gain more insight into the appropriate packages before bidding for the transformational scheme.”

December saw a fall in Welsh Business Activity

According to the latest NatWest Wales PMI® data, private sector firms indicated a renewed fall in output during December.

The decrease in activity was linked to a further drop in client demand, with firms reducing their workforce numbers for the sixth month running. Nonetheless, the outlook for output over the coming year improved, as optimism improved to the strongest since July.

On the price front, the rate of output charge inflation softened to a marginal pace, despite a marked rise in cost burdens.

The headline Wales Business Activity Index – a seasonally adjusted index that measures the combined output of the manufacturing and service sectors – registered 49.3 in December, down from 50.8 in November, to signal a marginal decline in business activity across the Welsh private sector. The rate of contraction was in line with that seen across the UK as a whole. Local firms linked the fall to a further downturn in new order inflows.

December data indicated a fifth successive decrease in new business across the Welsh private sector. The rate of decline softened, however, and was only fractional overall. Companies stated that there were signs of domestic demand starting to pick-up.

That said, the trend in Wales contrasted with that seen at the UK level, where a fractional expansion was recorded.

Backlogs of work continued to decline at the end of 2019, with the rate of depletion remaining solid, despite easing to the weakest in three months. Panellists suggested that spare capacity was due to a sustained drop in client demand.

In contrast with the trend seen across the UK as a whole, Welsh private sector firms registered a further fall in workforce numbers at the end of the year. Lower staffing levels were reportedly due to the non-replacement of voluntary leavers.

Input costs continued to increase in December, with inflation quickening to a marked pace that was the fastest since June. The rate of increase was the joint-sharpest of the 12 monitored UK areas, with many local firms linking this to higher supplier prices.

Despite the faster rise in costs, the rate of increase in selling prices moderated and was among the slowest in four years. Service providers registered a slower rise in charges than manufacturers.

Finally, output expectations for the coming year improved in December, with the degree of optimism reaching the highest since July. That said, Welsh companies were among the least optimistic of the 12 monitored UK areas.

Multi-Million Pound Funding Secured for City Deal – Business News Wales

A multi-million pound early New Year present has arrived to turbo-charge the Swansea Bay City Deal.

The first phase of City Deal funding – worth £18 million – has been released by the UK Government and Welsh Government for the investment programme, which covers Carmarthenshire, Neath Port Talbot, Pembrokeshire and Swansea.

The funding is based on the approval of two City Deal projects – the Swansea City and Waterfront Digital District, and Canolfan S4C Yr Egin.

Construction work has now started on a 3,500-capacity digital indoor arena on a site adjacent to the LC in Swansea. Also forming part of the City Deal project in Swansea is a digital village on Kingsway for tech and digitally focussed businesses, as well as a box village and innovation precinct development for start-up businesses at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David SA1.
